Please read and follow the below policies and procedures for participating in the Dollars for Scholars program.
Volunteering Procedures
Found an opportunity on the calendar you would like to volunteer for?
- Click on the opportunity
- Review the opportunity to ensure that it is something you are interesting and that you are available on the required dates and times
- Find the contact phone or email for the opportunity sponsor
- Contact the program sponsor directly, identify yourself as a Dollars for Scholars volunteer and indicate your interest in volunteering.
Helpful Hints:
- Be sure to ask questions if you need further clarification on the opportunity.
- Don’t forget to ask for a contact phone number on the day of the opportunity in the event you need to reach the sponsor.
- Don’t forget to ask for directions, start & end times, and if there are any dress code requirements
- If you have to cancel your commitment, CALL the sponsor ASAP! Never just ‘don’t show up’.
- Remember you are representing yourself and the Dollars for Scholars program. Many organizations that request Dollars for Scholars volunteers also donate to the scholarship fund so please be courteous, on-time and work hard.
Recording and Receiving Credit for Volunteer Hours
To ensure you receive the proper credit for all of you volunteer hours you must follow the program guidelines as outlined below….
- Only submit hours associated with pre-approved program opportunities. If an opportunity is listed on the “Calendar” it is approved. If you find out about an opportunity that is not on the DFS webpage calendar, check with your High School Counselor or e-mail one of the members of the DFS Board listed under “Board Contacts” on this site to receive approval. Generally, organization who are included on the Approved Non-Profit List & Contacts in the Student Resources pages. If you are not sure – ask!
- You MUST turn in the signed paper copy of your “Student Record of Volunteer Activity” (aka: log sheet) to get credit for your hours. Check with your High School Counselor for location of the Log Sheet drop box.
- Is each day or event logged separately and signed by an adult (not your parent) who supervised the activity?
- Have you checked your math in totaling your volunteer hours?
- Is all the information legible and clear?
- Are all phone numbers clear and correct on the Student Record of Volunteer Activities?
- Has all service on the Student Record of Volunteer Activities taken place in this service year?
- Did all volunteer work take place on San Juan Island?
- Have you volunteered for at least 3 different organizations? (you must compete this requirement by the time you graduate to receive a scholarship)
- Did you assist on at least one DFS fundraising activity and log at least 3 hours of DSF fundraising support? (you must complete this requirement by the time you graduate to receive a scholarship)
- Did you make a copy of your Student Record of Volunteer Activities (log sheet) to keep for your own records before turning it into the Counseling Office?
Guidelines
- Plays, concerts, band, yearbook, Pony Club, dancing and other school club and performance activities are NOT eligible as volunteer hours.
- Did the event or volunteer activity take place on San Juan Island or did it benefit the San Juan Island community. If you are unsure, ask your high school counselor or e-mail the DFS Board for clarification.
- Students must complete a minimum of 80 volunteer hours by the time they graduate and are eligible to start in 8th grade and work to this goal throughout the four years of high school.
- No more than 8 hours credit is allocated within any 24 hour period.
- SENIORS!! If you are a graduating senior, your last day to turn in your Student Record of Volunteer Activity (log sheet) will be with your Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Application. DFS Scholarship Application will be due on the same day all other high school scholarship applications are due. Please check with your High School Counselor.
- Student Record of Volunteer Activities (log sheet) can be turned in anytime during the school year, but are due on the last day of school for all non-graduating seniors for the past summer and school year.
- Summer volunteer opportunities often available. Just download a log sheet to keep track. You can turn in your summer volunteer log sheet when school starts in the fall.
